HOW CAN I STOP FEELING EMBARRASSED ABOUT ENJOYING NICHE SEXUAL ACTIVITIES?

-

‘People are more scared of the things in life that are unfamiliar to them, or they don’t understand, and because of the taboo around sex, feelings of embarrassment or shame are much more prevalent,’ says Kate Moyle, psychosexual relationship therapist and host of The Sexual Wellness

Sessions podcast. This doesn’t mean you’ll feel icky about what turns you on forever. Shame thrives in silence, so if you’re partnered up, Moyle recommends communicating exactly what you want by listening to a podcast, reading an article or watching something together that references your preferred kink to help open up the conversation. ‘Use positive and affirmative language about wanting to do it together, explaining why it makes you feel good,’ she explains. ‘And if it’s not for your partner, don’t take it personally. Just as you have a right to express your desires, they have a right to say no.’ Enjoying solo sex right now? Journal your desires and fantasies – opening that dialogue with yourself should limit self-judgement and help you articulate what you want next time you’ve got company in bed.
