Welcome to Women’s Health

It’s the end of another year with a difference. We entered 2021 hopeful that we’d conclude it in a more positive place than we started; we dreamed of lockdowns and restrictions as distant memories and festive celebrations with loved ones back on the cards. As I write this – and I hope I’m wrong – it’s not certain: the news advises caution, and with NHS waiting lists and key workers in mind, I urge you to play your part.

But there’s much to be thankful for if we look for the wins. I’m grateful for good health. Being fit and feeling well means I’m in the lucky position of doing my dream day job, having fun with my children (nine-year-old Zak and Nell, six) and exercising regularly to stay healthy.

2021 had many highlights, but one that stands out is taking Nell on our cover shoot with Strictly Come Dancing star Dianne Buswell. Watching her eyes light up as Dianne invited her to have some pictures taken was a moment I’ll never forget. Dressed in a tutu, she posed confidently for the camera and Dianne was beyond kind, so I want to take this opportunity to thank her.

I’m also grateful to you, our dedicated audience. You’ve been integral to this brand’s huge growth, helping us remain the trusted industry leader we’ve worked hard to be. Speaking of hard work. WH wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for my brilliant team, so I’m handing over to them, to ask what they’re grateful for as 2022 dawns.

Roisín Dervish- O’kane, Senior Editor

‘I’m thankful to have friendships that weathered the pandemic. I know I’m lucky when research shows friendship groups have shrunk since Covid hit.’

Francesca Menato, Acting Executive Editor, Digital

‘I’m grateful to be injury-free. In early 2020 I had such bad ITB syndrome I could barely walk, but I persisted with rehab, remained patient, and in October ran the London Marathon in 3:16. It was the best day of my life.’

Nikki Osman, Features Director

‘I’m grateful for fun. Since life opened up again in July, I’ve prioritised good times and it’s made me realise how few of them I’ve had over the past two years. It’s such an underrated life-enhancer and I will never take it for granted again.’

Victoria Joy, Executive Editor, Print

‘I’ll always appreciate a good fake tan, but I’m truly thankful for the little things. A puzzle, a lazy night in with my husband, getting lost in a book, a hot chocolate, a giggle with my toddler son. Moments easily overlooked, but I’m making a conscious effort not to.’

As 2021 draws to a close, I encourage you to concentrate on what you’re grateful for. Those simple things that enrich life the most.

Have a very merry and restful Christmas, whatever that may look like for you. Until the new year.
