‘Vitamin A is actually a group of fat-soluble compounds called retinoids,’ says dietitian Sophie Medlin (citydietitians.co.uk). ‘It exists in two forms: preformed vitamin A, which mainly derives from animal products, and provitamin A (a provitamin is converted into a vitamin by your body after you consume it), which mainly comes from plant sources.’ As for vitamin A’s main roles? ‘Improving vision, aiding fertility, generating communication between cells and boosting immune function – mainly because of its anti-inflammatory properties.’
