The brain reaction
A number of researchers, including Dr Huskey, are now investigating the neuroscience of flow states. Here are three interesting insights about what’s happening in your noggin
1 YOU START TO LOOK OUTSIDE YOURSELF
There’s a deactivation of brain regions that play a role in selfreferential thinking, Dr Huskey says. ‘That might be why, when experiencing flow, we’re not thinking about ourselves.’ Instead of worrying about what’s on your mind, such as picking up bread and milk, you focus on the task at hand.
2 YOU’RE FLOODED WITH A COCKTAIL OF HELPFUL CHEMICALS
The brain produces a neurochemical mix of dopamine, serotonin, endorphins and more, Dr Sarkis says. This allows you to reach what scientists call ‘a nonordinary state of consciousness.’ You need this chemical cascade to make the shift.
3 YOUR BRAIN BECOMES MORE METABOLICALLY EFFICIENT
Flow occurs when you’re doing challenging tasks, such as running. ‘You’re expending a lot of energy when running, but you don’t feel like it,’ Dr Huskey says. ‘But afterwards, you might think, “I’m so tired.”’ Picture pro marathoners who collapse at the finish line...
