Tiny and completely on their own, leatherback turtle hatchlings must head towards the water

October is peak time for people hoping to watch leatherback turtles nesting. After mating at sea, females dig nests in soft sand and lay around 100 eggs before covering them and returning to the sea. Hatchlings emerge two months later and embark on a perilous journey across the beach to the relative safety of the ocean.
