De­cem­ber is a noisy time for gen­too pen­guins as hun­dreds of chicks try to lo­cate their par­ents

Gen­too pen­guins are ded­i­cated par­ents, guard­ing their stone nests and tak­ing turns to in­cu­bate pairs of eggs. The chicks hatch af­ter a month and join large crèches with other chicks once they’ve found their feet. At around three months old they lose their fluffy plumage and can start swim­ming.
