The calf is re­liant on its mother’s rich milk but be­gins to eat solid foods af­ter just one week. It is vul­ner­a­ble prey for preda­tors so stays close to its mother and the herd.

Wean­ing 6 months

Dur­ing the first six months of its life a calf will dou­ble its body weight ev­ery two to three weeks. Af­ter six months the calf will be weaned and is no longer re­liant on its mother for food.
