Adaptable hooves

World of Animals - - All About Reindeer -

Reindeer have large feet with two small dewclaws and two crescent-shaped toes. During summer, when the ground is soft, the footpads are thick and spongy; in the winter, they shrink and harden, so that only the rim of

the hoof is in contact with the cold ground.
