Rein­deer are tra­di­tion­ally a ma­jor food source for the Inuit peo­ple, and hunt­ing is cur­rently un­reg­u­lated. They have been hunted for their meat and thick, warm fur coats for hun­dreds of years and are of­ten kept in semido­mes­ti­cated herds and used for trans­porta­tion in the snow.
