FIFA pres­i­dent Gianni In­fantino es­caped sanc­tion by the ethics cham­ber over al­le­ga­tions con­cern­ing the use of pri­vate jets and ex­ploita­tion of other ex­penses. In the end, the is­sues – aris­ing while his em­ploy­ment con­tract re­mained un­re­solved – were not sig­nif­i­cant enough to bring him down.

How­ever that close call ap­pears to have acted as a warn­ing shot across the bows – and one which he has heeded af­ter his bull-in-a-china-shop early months in charge.

Staff changes have con­tin­ued at FIFA, but that is com­mon­place when a new boss takes of­fice. And struc­tural re-align­ments are be­ing un­der­taken not only by In­fantino but by new sec­re­tary-gen­eral Fatma Samoura.
