MLADEN KRSTAJIC

- Vladimir Novak

Serbia did not qualify for the last four Euros and participation at the last two World Cup Finals ended with failures. So is it fair to say that qualifying for this World Cup is a fine achievement?

Successful qualification for the World Cup is an enormous success; a success that we have to be proud of as a nation. There are times when I’m not quite sure if and to what extent Serbia’s supporters are aware how difficult it is to qualify for the World Cup and what we managed to achieve. It is very easy to forget our position and the positions of Wales, Republic of Ireland and Austria before these qualifications. I expect for us to give our best in Russia and to be dignified in every match. We have to show boldness, strong character and courage. We will play against teams that are better ranked at FIFA list than we are. And that is not an alibi, but a fact.

What can we expect from Serbia? Tell us about the style of play...

The most important thing for us is to have a good atmosphere and ambiance. As a player I learnt that was the main precondition for a good result. Although I was a defender I don’t run away from attacking football, but there always has to be discipline. We won’t be loose cannons. We will be patient and try to use every chance we get.

Are you having any issues with injured

players and poor form?

There is a deadline until June 4 to register 23 players, and as for the first XI there is still enough time. The league seasons were long and hard, and injury possibilities are realistic. We could be in serious trouble if any of our top players were injured. Since early April my assistants were in all the European clubs where our players perform. They talked to doctors and physiotherapists in order to prepare the best possible plan and programme. We have to be absolutely ready for everything and nothing can be amiss.

In qualifying you played 3-4-3 but that has changed now. Could this be a problem?

Serbia can play in different formations. The players are experienced enough for that. They are serious professionals and can play any style and system of the game. What formation we will play depends on many factors. It’s still early to talk about that. There’s enough time until the first match in the tournament. One should also not forget the two warm-up games we will play before the World Cup. That will be an opportunity for us to prepare the team as best as we can for everything that awaits us in Russia. The system depends on the players, and not vice versa.

Some think that it might be a handicap to have a national coach with little experience...

It is a great honour and responsibility to be coach of your country’s national team. I have never run away from responsibilities and challenges. People know quite enough about my career. So there’s no need for me to state all my achievements. I am aware that there are many who are ready to criticise first, but I’m prepared for that. My technical staff is experienced enough.

Who is your favourite to win the title?

Again, that too depends on the players’ lists of the teams. Germany is first, then Brazil and Spain.

Who could become the biggest surprise?

Belgium.
