TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Same squad to go again

-

There are two ways of looking at Spurs’ decision to make no new signings this summer – which was the first time a Premier League club had completely ignored a transfer window since the system came into being back in 2003.

Some see it as a symptom of complacency, a misguided assumption on the part of the club’s board that, as long as they have a coach of the calibre of Mauricio Pochettino, a topfour Premier League place is guaranteed. Others take a more relaxed view, arguing that Spurs already have the necessary strength in depth in most areas. After all, why shell out inflated prices for players who, at best, will be sitting on the bench most weeks ?

With a little luck on their side, Spurs could go deep in this competition.

They have classy individuals, function splendidly as a collective unit and there were unmistakable signs last term that Pochettino’s side were getting to grips with life at this level. The proof? The impressive victories over Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, and a narrow loss to Juventus in the round of 16 – a tie that they dominated for long periods.

In which area do they lack cover?

Undoubtedly in the striker department, where Harry Kane more or less has to shoulder the burden alone. Back-up Fernando Llorente is arguably past his prime, and while South Korea’s Son Heung-min could be deployed as a false nine he offers far more out wide.

Could World Cup burn-out be an issue for the squad?

Spurs were the most-represented club side in the latter stages of Russia 2018, with nine of their players taking part in the semi-finals. World Cups are enormously taxing affairs and Pochettino and his medical team will have to treat those individuals gently.

Will problems over a home venue cause difficulties?

Because of safety concerns Tottenham have had to delay the opening of their new stadium until at least October. It has already been confirmed that their first home game in the Champions League will be staged at Wembley and they could end up hosting fixtures both there and their new home – which is not ideal.
