Iraq’s Al Quwa Al Jawiya – whose name translates as Air Force Club – became the first team to win the AFC Cup for three successive years, beating Altyn Asyr 2-0 in the Final at the Basra Sport City Stadium in southern Iraq.

Hammadi Ahmed and Ibrahim Bayesh scored for the Iraqis, while Selim Nurmuradov missed a penalty late on for the visitors, who were the first Turkmenistan team to reach the Final.

Following on from victories over Tajikistan’s Istiklol last year and Bengaluru of India in 2016, the Iraqi club have now also equalled Al Kuwait’s record haul of three AFC Cup titles.

Ahmed, who played in the two previous Finals and scored against Bengaluru in 2016, called this year’s goal “the most important of my career because I scored in the Final as the team captain”.

Important... Hammadi Ahmed
