Only establishe­d in 1999 and named after one of the districts of the Georgian capital Tbilisi, Saburtalo won the league for the first time, clinching the title with three games to spare by beating Dinamo Tbilisi 2-1. Torpedo Kutaisi won the cup for a fourth time, beating modest secondtier side Gagra on penalties after a 2-2 draw. Saburtalo are in the Champions League first qualifying round, while, Dinamo Tbilisi, Torpedo Kutaisi and Chikhura Sachkhere are in the Europa League first qualifying round.

Deducted six points, Kolkheti Poti finished bottom and were demoted automatica­lly, being replaced by Dinamo Batumi. Sioni Bolnisi and Samtredia will play off against Gagra and WIT Georgia respective­ly to retain their top-flight status. Dinamo Tbilisi academy graduate Budu Zivzivadze, who was on loan from Danish club Esbjerg, scored 22 times in 34 games. Appointed coach of Saburtalo in October 2016, Giorgi Chiabrishv­ili guided his small club to a famous title win. Brazilian forward Leandro Ribeiro returned to Dila in March 2018 on loan from Maccabi Netanya and scored 14 goals in his first full season of elite division football in Georgia.
