A positive COVID-19 test for regular centre-back Brandon Mechele allowed Kossounou to get a starting berth with Belgian champions Club Brugge, and the talented teenager seized his chance, becoming a regular in the back-line.

Now just turned 20, he has turned around his profile after initially proving unconvincing when joining from Swedish side Hammarby in 2019.

Coaches have worked hard on his positioning, moving him from right-back to centre-back, while encouraging his aggression. Playing in the Champions League group phase has been a massive boost to his confidence and since the return of international football last October, Kossounou has collected four caps for his country, the Ivory Coast.
