Many in German football circles see the 17-year-old attacking midfielder as the most gifted player of his generation. Last season, after scoring against Bayern Munich, Wirtz became the youngest-ever marksman in the history of the Bundesliga (17 years and 34 days). Shortly before Christmas, he signed a new contract with Leverkusen, which theoretically ties him to the Bay-Arena club until 2023.
