4-3-3 with a twist

-

The Netherlands will play a 4-3-3 system, but with a tweak. Up front Memphis Depay has the freedom to wander, while the wingers often have to drop deep. Who will be on the flanks is still open for debate, although PSV’s Donyell Malen should be one of them. An alternative front-line could see Luuk de Jong lead the attack as a target man with Depay deployed on the left wing.

In midfield, Frenkie de Jong and Georginio Wijnaldum are key. But who will be the man for the defensive duties? Atalanta’s Marten de Roon is favourite, but is often criticised for his inferior buildup qualities. De Boer tried Davy Klaassen, however his habit of getting forward leaves the team vulnerable to counter attacks. Donny van de Beek’s chances of starting have been hampered by his lack of game time at club level.

If Virgil van Dijk doesn’t recover in time, Stefan de Vrij will be a solid successor. De Boer could also opt for a 5-3-2 system, especially against stronger teams. Apart from De Vrij, Nathan Ake is a contender for the third centre-back position. That gives Denzel Dumfries and the currently injured Daley Blind the opportunity to go forward, something that suits both.
