THE VIEW FROM SLOVAKIA

-

“In 2016, Slovakia were more mature, our players were in better shape and Martin Skrtel was a great motivator. Milan Skriniar is playing well at Inter but our goalkeepers aren’t first-choice at their clubs. Stanislav Lobotka is clever and creative, but doesn’t start at Napoli. Anything is possible.”

“In Slovakia, there is no talk of the round of 16 but, after making it through a very difficult play-off, our determination is clear. Today’s team is built on collective strength and a cohesive spirit. Sweden will be our most difficult match - we’ve not beaten them in five games.”

Stefan Tarkovic stepped into the breach on the eve of the vital play-off against Northern Ireland, a surprising but bold move by the Slovak FA. His predecessor, the Czech Pavel Hapal, had only just led Slovakia in the earlier play-off win over the Republic of Ireland.

Tarkovic was brought in to steady the ship and impose his favoured 4-1-4-1 system. Assistant to Jan Kozak at Euro 2016, he began his managerial career as Slovakia Women’s Under-19s coach, and later the Men’s Under-18s. He was given a permanent contract in December.
