Immediately after Inter had wrapped up the league title for the first time since 2010, the players received a note from management that basically said: “Well done for winning the Scudetto; now we want you to take a two-month wage cut.”

Last February, Inter’s Chinese owners, electronics giant Suning, posted a €3.9bn loss for the year 2020, prompting initial speculation that they might want to sell the Italian giants.

That is not going to happen but, faced with a €244m debt, Inter have launched a 15 per cent austerity cutback package which will impact on next season. Just for a start, it led to Antonio Conte’s departure and at least one of their top players is expected to be sold.
