Portugal were handed the unenviable task of facing Belgium in the last 16 having finished third in Group F. Although they held France in a compelling 2-2 draw and were the only side to beat Hungary, their 4-2 capitulation to Germany did suggest that defending their crown may prove beyond Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. And so it proved: the holders sent 24 shots in the vague direction of Thibaut Courtois’ goal in that knockout game, but the fact that only five found the target summed up their attacking play. Renato Sanches offered much-needed drive, but too many of his more experienced team-mates failed to deliver in the 1-0 defeat.
