SEMI-FINALISTS: SPAIN
Luis Enrique’s side won only one of their six matches in 90 minutes – a 5-0 drubbing of Slovakia – but managed to dominate games, averaging more possession than any other team. They got the job done up until a dramatic semi-final versus Italy where Dani Olmo and Alvaro Morata failed to convert in the penalty shootout; the latter’s decisive miss encapsulating a tournament in which he failed to provide the clinical edge that his side so badly needed. Nevertheless, there are encouraging signs that future stars such as Pedri, Ferran Torres and Olmo (plus the absent Ansu Fati) will have enough spark to make them more productive in key moments going forward, although a replacement will be needed for influential yet ageing midfield captain Sergio Busquets.
