Len ASHURST
(1939-2021)
After a playing career that saw him break Sunderland’s appearance record, Ashurst went on to enjoy a long managerial career. As Newport County manager, he not only took the team into the Third Division, but also the quarter-finals of the European Cup Winners’ Cup, having won the
Welsh Cup in 1980. Although he later returned to Sunderland, and took them to their first League Cup final, he was sacked after their relegation from the First Division. In 2014 he was inducted into the LMA Hall of Fame.
