Ray KENNEDY

(1951-2021)

The gifted, left-footed midfielder scored 72 goals in seven-and-a-half seasons at Liverpool, having made his name at Arsenal. In 1970-71 he hit 26 goals in all comps as the Gunners won the double.

He moved to Anfield in 1974, on the same day that Bill Shankly resigned as manager. “Maybe it will be said that one of the last things I did at this club was to sign a great new player,” declared Shankly, and he was proven right: under new boss Bob Paisley, Kennedy won five league titles and three European Cups.

He left Liverpool in 1982, and later played for Swansea City and Hartlepool United, before being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1984.
