Fan pressure ends Jesus’ second Benfica spell

Benfica have parted company with coach Jorge Jesus, midway through his second season at the club after being reappointed in 2020.

Between 2009 and 2015, Jesus won three Portuguese league titles, multiple domestic cups and reached two Europa League finals, but his second spell was far less successful.

As the Lisbon club struggled to keep pace with league leaders Porto and Sporting, Jesus became increasingly unpopular amongst his own fans, to the extent that some set up a website called “Give back Jesus”. The homepage shows a small icon of the manager on a world map, and every click of the “clica

para devolver” button moves him 0.1 kilometres closer to his previous club, Flamengo.

After his departure, the page now simply reads: “Success. Thanks to all supporters who drove him away from Benfica.”
