Cautiously tiptoeing...
‘We (Anne Forrest and Judy
Price), both left school at fifteen with little opportunity for further education until decades later when Judith studied for a BA, and Anne for a Masters, in English Literature with Creative Writing at Wales’ Bangor University,’ writes subscriber
Anne Forrest.
‘This degree covered poetry, short stories, the novel, screen writing, and transformative work. Both eager to continue with our studies we undertook a Masters degree at the University of Chester in Creative Writing: Writing and Publishing Fiction. At Chester, we studied their speciality, flash fiction, through to a full-length novel, together with the many aspects of publishing.
‘Acknowledging the difficulty and disadvantages of traditional publishing, especially for two unknown writers, we decided to self-publish our collection of short stories, which are now available on Amazon as an ebook and paperback edition. The uncanny world contained in Cautiously Tiptoeing… Out of the Light, by Forrest & Price, is full of imaginative experiences which can be embraced by readers who like to push the boundaries of the everyday, to go beyond and behind the comfortable. Life itself is often just a footstep away from balance, from the status quo. Whether one steps gingerly and stealthily or with confident exploration, the uncanny is often just around the corner. Venturing out of the light the reader can stroll between rural Wales or Spain, walk in the Texas panhandle, wander along the Atchafalaya River, climb the Miners’ Path on Mount Snowdon; visit a London cemetery, a Victorian asylum, and an apothecary shop. They can meander back a couple of centuries, and then stalk the 1960s. Noticing intertextuality, and recognising a familiar fairy tale, they may abandon themselves to the possibility of anthropomorphism, and other worlds altogether.
‘My common-folk biography, My Whole World, Penmaenmawr, was published by Old Bakehouse, and Judith was commissioned to write stories for a “Ghost Walk”. We are both currently working on our first novels.
‘Following …Out of the Light, Forrest and Price are Cautiously Tiptoeing… Into the Thirteen Days of Christmas, published on 30 November.
