Soft Punk wants strong meat
Soft Punk is an international arts and culture quarterly, based in London and New York. The editorial team ‘are intentionally agnostic of a “house style” and liberated from dogmatic conceptions of brow’. The team
‘curate emotive, insightful, and occasionally brazen visual features, with generous space reserved for poetry and art of all mediums.’
They want fiction in the form of ‘short stories, coherent novel excerpts, and anything that might be deemed flash,’ poetry, and ‘personal essays that have sentiment but aren’t sentimental’. However, ‘If what you’ve got doesn’t fit neatly into any of these genre distinctions, we’d probably love it too.’ This team want ‘strong meat’: no ‘tepid punditry, stale takes on things you’ve already read… or anything your grandparents might circulate to their rotary club’ but ‘we have few preferences beyond strong sentences and clear thoughts’.
For the prose works – short stories, flash fiction, novel excerpts, and any crossdisciplinary work, essays as reported features, personal/critical essays, creative longform, opinions, polemics, interviews, and profiles and criticism in the form of art, books, film, music, theatre, and broad cultural commentary – give them your best. No reprints, sim or multiple submissions please.
Poetry may be ‘epic, lyric, satirical or prose’. Read what they publish to get the feeling for what they like. Artwork in the form of photography, painting, drawing, collage, video stills, documentation of performance work, and anything in between is always welcomed.
Writers may pitch for essays or submit a completed piece. Whilst the guidelines appear relaxed don’t make the mistake of submitting work which is not well-edited and proofread.
Response time is ‘slow to reasonable’. There is payment for all conributors,
