Previously unpublished articles that are ‘well written and thoughtful’ are wanted for Australia based Quadrant magazine which sees itself as a ‘journal of ideas, essays, literature, poetry and historical and political debate’ and has a founding bias towards ‘cultural freedom, anti-totalitarianism and classical liberalism’.
The magazine is published monthly in print and online for ten months of the year with combined issues in JanuaryFebruary and July-August. It publishes over 200 articles, 200 poems, twenty short stories and seventy book reviews each year.
Non-fiction articles and fiction may be anything between 1,500 and 5,000 words long, book reviews 800-2,000 words and poetry can be a few lines or several pages. The magazine does publish article footnotes in its online issues but not generally in its printed issue. Here, it is advised you keep references to a minimum and embed them in the text if necessary. For fiction submissions include your name at the head or foot of your story. All submissions must be doc files, submitted by email.
Payment is made for articles, short stories, poems and reviews and submissions may be published in print and online issues. Although there is percentage payment reduction made from payments to pay to the Australian Taxation Office if not submitting your work with an ABN number, GST status or Statement by a Supplier, overseas writers are exempt from this requirement.
