Writing Magazine

The most wonderful time to submit

- Gary Dalkin

December magazine is a biannual US literary journal founded in Iowa City in 1958 by a group of poets, writers, and artists who declared, ‘We are humanists… far more concerned with people than dogmatic critical or aesthetic attitudes.’ To date it has published six Pulitzer Prize winners, eight National Book Award winners, five US Poets Laureate and many more distinguished writers.

The editorial staff, led by publisher and editor Gianna Jacobson, invite submissions of exceptional, thought-provoking, previously unpublished poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction (essays, memoirs, biography, literary journalism, social or cultural commentary or analysis) and visual art that can be reproduced in a print format. The deadline is 1 May. No simultaneous submissions, and do not submit more than once per genre per submission period.

You can submit one piece of fiction or nonfiction, or up to three pieces of very short fiction or nonfiction up to 1,000 words each in a single file. Or submit 1-5 poems in a single file. Send enquiries for art submissions to art@decembermag.org

All submissions are read blind, so only include personal, identifying information in the cover letter section of the Submittable form at https://december.submittable.com/submit

There is a $2.50 fee for non-subscribers to cover the costs of using Submittable, or you can send your work by mail to december, PO Box 16130, St. Louis, MO 63105, USA with contact details in your cover letter.

Payment is $40 per page to a maximum of $200. Response time is 6-8 weeks. Essential to follow the full guidelines at https://decembermag.org/submit/
