Writing Magazine

For kids and feisty women

- PDR Lindsay-Salmon

Chapeltown Books is a Manchester small press producing ‘beautiful books’. They publish children’s books, flash fiction anthologies and are looking for books for the Feisty Women series. Submissions are open for all imprints with specific guidelines for each.

For picture books for children, writer-illustrators or a writer-illustrator team should submit the whole story and three sample pictures in one document. Indicate where page breaks would be or submit a pdf to show the suggested layout. Writers without illustrators should submit the whole text, with suggested pictures and page breaks.

For emergent reader texts and novels, up to 20,000 words, submit the complete text. For books for ages

7-10, submit a synopsis and the first three chapters, or up to 20,000 words, whichever is the shorter. Books for teens and YA are dealt with in The Red Telephone imprint, wanting novels, 45,000-105,000 words. Submit a 500-word synopsis and first three chapters or 10,000 words, whichever is the shorter.

For flash fiction, up to 1,000 words per piece, the collection must be about 65 pages or at least 10,000 words. Writers must have had ‘five or more stories accepted on CafeLit or in the Bridge House anthologies’ to be accepted.

Submissions for the Feisty Women series may be fiction and nonfiction. A feminist sub-text is permitted provided it is not fanatical. Submit a 500-word synopsis and the first three chapters or up to 10,000 words, whichever is less. The novel may be based on a real person or be fiction.

For non-fiction provide a list of chapters with a short paragraph about the content of each chapter, and three complete sample chapters.

Response time is ‘reasonable’. Payment is through ‘a profit share royalty, a fifty-fifty split on the profit from each book sale’.
