Repeat, refresh

- Tina Jackson

Repeater Books publishes intelligent, radical books that present alternative thought for a wide readership.

‘We work across every genre and niche, the two connecting strands being that ours are books that we believe have to be in print, and that they all reflect our taste,’ said publisher Tariq Goddard. ‘So for example, this month we have released books on the political history of London, an occult guide to the United Kingdom and a dystopian literary thriller.’

Repeater Books is approaching its seventh anniversary. ‘We started in 2014, having formerly been Zero Books and fallen out with our parent company, John Hunt Publishing,’ said Tariq. ‘Our approach and avowed mission was similar, which was getting into print authors missed by mainstream publishers, and discovering first time authors. Like most small to medium size publishers, our first few years, despite our many successes, have been preoccupied with survival rather than projecting into the future. Not being preoccupied with survival would be a good way to develop in future, and now, despite the pandemic, seems all but assured.’

Repeater Books publishes between 24 to 28 books each year. ‘We’re looking for a freshness of approach, an ability to make unlikely connections no matter how familiar the subject matter, a willingness to be brave and even indulgent whilst still recognising that our aim is to interest a mainstream readership.’ said Tariq. ‘Originality, sincerity and compulsion are key. Don’t hedge your bets, write the book you really want to as if it doesn’t work, you will at least have satisfied yourself.’

Tariq is happy to receive proposals form interested authors. ‘We have an online Submittable page that authors can upload their proposals to,’ he said. ‘We try to get back to all submissions within a month.’

Repeater Books publishes in various formats. ‘Sometimes hardback, mostly paperback, digital and audio. Our formats and production quality of our titles are the same as an ordinary publisher, though we hope the design and content is very different.’

Authors receive modest advances in some cases, and standard industry royalties in all cases.
