Fresh perspectives wanted at Greenpeace
Freelance writers and journalists are invited to pitch articles for the Greenpeace UK website.
This well known environmental campaign organisation likes writers who can tell stories from lots of different perspectives and can write with flair and conviction. Pitches are invited for everything from features to personal essays, profiles, case studies and quizzes too.
Particularly invited to pitch are those who have a background of disability, neurodivergence, are of colour, LGBTQIA+, working class or feel they have ‘typically not been well served or represented by the mainstream environment movement’.
Articles should be for a general audience and clearly relate to Greenpeace’s mission, full details of which can be found on the website. Although international stories are welcome a UK angle is better. Liked are stories told through characters and events and that ‘motivate, inspire or equip people to help build a better world’. Original angles on green lifestyles are also liked, particularly if they highlight the ‘overlooked expertise of marginalised groups’. Personal essays should have a wider argument or lesson that can be drawn from the experience.
The website has a list of eleven current themes which include Nature and the City, Activism and Identity, Hidden Histories and fiction or non-fiction stories connected to the environment. Check website for additional themes and any changes.
When pitching include a summary and specifics of your story, idea or argument and a ‘hook’ on the relevant and interesting points in your article or how it might fill a gap in the debate. Also invited are pitches that are constructive, critical or challenging of any aspect of Greenpeace’s work or history and the wider environmental movement, especially if it is from a social justice perspective. Include with your pitch a brief introduction to yourself and links to your published work.
Basic payment rates are £350 for standard articles of 800-1,200 words or 1-2 interviews. Payment may be paid for travel or extended reportage for ‘truly exceptional pitches’.
