GLOBAL LITERARY MARKET

Book and journal home for literary works

- PDR Lindsay-Salmon

The editorial team at the EastOver Press seek submissions of collections of short stories, essays, or poetry, although they are ‘open to hybrid forms that might combine aspects of different genres’. Check out the website for their published list and guidelines. The team read and respond to prose manuscripts on a rolling basis and to poetry manuscripts during specific submission windows. Check the details on the Submittable page. They enjoy featuring established writers, but ‘are just as excited to discover emerging writers’. Think literary for this publisher, although they have a flexible definition of literary, but romance or graphic novels or space opera are definitely not their style. Follow the submission guidelines.

The team also publish Cutleaf, an online literary journal, published twice a month, which welcomes ‘unsolicited and unpublished original poetry, short stories, essays, and other nonfiction’. Again they prefer literary fiction and are unlikely to publish genre fiction. The editors consider simultaneous submissions with the usual proviso, but not reprints or multiple submissions. Work published online in Cutleaf may be chosen for inclusion in the Cutleaf Anthology published at the end of every calendar year.

The team welcome fiction ‘of all shapes and sizes’. Stories, no more than 6,000 words, may be submitted as one long piece or up to three short pieces and flash fiction must be under 1,000 words. Essays, under 6,000 words, may be standard or hybrid in form. Speculative nonfiction, essays based in metaphor, essays in verse, and other re-imaginings of the format are welcome. Essays about ‘literature, travel, music, visual art, and film in multiple formats’ are preferred.

Submit prose in a standard publishing format. Upload the submission as one MS Word file. Don’t forget full contact details on the first page.

Poetry is sought in many styles and formats. Submit one to seven poems. Upload the entire submission as one doc file.

Response time is ‘within three months’.

Rights and royalties for books are discussed on acceptance. Payment for Cutleaf ranges from $100 to $400 for prose and $50 to $100 for poetry for ‘non-exclusive first serial rights throughout North America to publish work in all editions of Cutleaf.
