‘Reader-friendly pieces with a conversational tone’ are invited for Horse Illustrated and Young Rider magazines.
The former magazine is for hands-on horse owners and has easily accessible information on horse care, riding and training. Wanted are shorter pieces of 5001,200 words on topics which can add to the magazine’s regular training and horse care features. Humour and personal stories are also wanted. Checkout the website for the editor’s wish list of topics.
The Young Rider magazine is for and about ‘horse crazy tweens and teens of ages 8-15 years’ and has a mixture of English and Western riding instruction, horse care and how-to tips, contests, quizzes, interactive articles and ‘horsey interest stories about real kids’. Word counts should be around 800 words. Also invited are short stories of approximately 8001,000 words. They should be told in the third person, have a definite plot, some kind of humorous, serious or not so serious conflict and a resolution.
New writers and contributors should submit completed manuscripts while others should first pitch an idea showing the specific angle for the piece, how you intend to cover it and mention any expert resources you might interview and if you have quality photographs to accompany your piece. There are photo tips on the website. ‘A good pitch letter is an opportunity to show your writing skill and demonstrate you have an understanding of our magazine and audience’ say guidelines.
