Into Autofocus

Autofocus is a brand new literary publishing group publishing both books and a literary magazine.

The editorial team specialise in autobiography. They want to publish ‘personal essay, memoir, confessional poetry, curated journals and diaries, curated letters and emails, hybrid explorations of the self, and any writing that makes art from one’s personal life’. The team also publish an associated podcast, The Lives of Writers.

Autofocus, the online literary magazine, publishes one new piece of writing every four or so days. Occasionally, the team ‘feature three new works by one writer at one time as a special site takeover issue’. The podcast, Episodes of The Lives of Writers, is released every seven to fourteen days. The team aim to publish 4-6 books in their first year.

The magazine is open to submissions and the team ‘would love to read various forms and genres of artful autobiographical writing’. Of course they expect personal essays and memoirs but they also like, the more unusual forms of autobiography especially hybrid explorations of the self. The team understand that ‘Since all autobiographical work, due to the nature of memory and self-perception, is in some way fictional,’ they accept autofiction with a warning. Work published is not labelled by genre, therefore ‘please understand readers may interpret the piece as memoir’. Collaborative work is welcome, too, as is ‘work that includes photography and visual art’.

Simultaneous submissions are expected, but no reprints or multiple subs please. Before emailing submissions do read the work online and listen to the podcast to get an idea of what the team mean by autobiography. There’s a wide range of work. Response time is ‘within thirty days.’ Payment and rights discussed on acceptance.
