Writing Magazine

Write for the world

- Jenny Roche

The New Internationalist is a bimonthly print and online magazine covering the issues facing the world today and regularly commissions pieces from freelancers with experience in writing concise, clear, non academic stories with a global perspective or resonance for an international readership.

‘We aim to bring to life the people, the ideas and the action in the fight for global justice’ say guidelines. ‘The topics we cover span social justice, global inequality, the environment, feminism and liberatory struggles, tech politics and… occasionally investigative reports and in-depth features.’

Articles are generally 800-1,200 words long and there are example articles on the website which you can read.

When submitting or pitching an article idea think about where it might fit in the magazine and consider the word length, area of interest and tone/angle in the different sections. The magazine has long lead times so it is best if your piece is not too time sensitive. Include your main areas of expertise and links to previously published work when submitting.

The editorial team usually meet around the middle of each month to discuss speculative pitches and you will only be contacted if your pitch is successful.

Pitches are welcome for the web, which has under-reported worldwide topics, important social movements and struggles in the fight for global justice and radical opinion pieces with an international perspective. Pitches for short online videos or multimedia projects are also welcome. There is a pitching form on the website which in addition to your idea asks for a catchy title and eye-grabbing teaser, the primary and secondary sources you would use, how you would promote it if published and whether you have submitted the piece elsewhere or as part of a partnership. You will also be asked the kind of story – analysis, opinion, investigative report, report or multimedia such as video, photographs, audio.

To subscribe to a bimonthly call-out for pitches for the Currents front section of the magazine, which has 4,000-6,000-word new stories, send an email with a little about yourself and some of your published clippings to: hazel.healy@newint.org
