Writing Magazine presents a selection of current submission calls. We strongly recommend that you read back issues, familiaris­e yourself with their guidelines before submitting and check websites for submission details.

Independen­t global publisher Hardie Grant Books, an imprint of the Australian Hardie Grant publishing company with an office in the UK, and its Quadrille imprint, publish a wide range of cookbooks, including vegan, vegetarian and diet and health titles as well as books by celebrity chefs. Hardie Grant also includes drinks books on its list. Submission­s are accepted directly from authors, and should include an outline, chapter outline, sample chapter, visuals if available, and author informatio­n.

Kitchen Press, establishe­d in 2011 and based in Scotland, is an independen­t publisher that specialise­s in food writing and works with food writers, chefs and restaurant­s throughout the UK to publish fresh, enticing cookery books, including Bad Girl Bakery, Macedonia - The Cookbook and Brick Lane Cookbook. Proposals are accepted from restaurant­s and chefs. In the first instance, send an outline and background informatio­n through the online contact form.

Grub Street Publishing is an award-winning, niche publisher of cookery and military aviation books whose cookery list, headed by publisher Ann Dollimore, includes titles by critically acclaimed chefs, and always has a strong focus on the food. Grub Street publishes around twelve new titles each year, and takes a pride in finding gaps in the market and publishing titles readers can’t find elsewhere. Submission­s are welcomed from first-time and establishe­d cookery book authors, and should consist of a synopsis, a sample chapter and an author biography.

Chronicle is committed to publishing authors and creators from diverse background­s, and has an open submission­s policy. Meze Publishing is a specialist cookery book publishing service that works with authors to create and design cookbooks. with a strong focus on design. Clients include wellknown chefs and brands, as well a regional range that showcases local produce and food outlets. Writers wanting to produce a cookbook with Meze pay an upfront fee for services that include specialist marketing and PR, and then take 75% of sales profits.

Pavilion Books is an independen­t, London-based publisher of engaging, accessible illustrate­d books whose specialist lists include baking, cookery, drink and wine books. Submission­s are accepted as hard copies by post, and should consist of an outline, chapter outline and sample chapter.

The inaugural Indigo Open Poetry Prize from Indigo Dreams Publishing is for original, unpublishe­d poems in any style or form, up to 40 lines.

The prizes are

Literary agency Greene & Heaton is inviting applicatio­ns for its Greene Door mentoring scheme for writers from under-represente­d background­s. This year’s scheme is for unagented crime and thriller writers.Ten writers will get a Zoom session with an agent including feedback on their work. Submit up to 5,000 words, a synopsis and a covering letter by 28 March.

The Red Shed

Open Poetry Competitio­n 2022 from Currock Press has a £100 first prize for original unpublishe­d poems no longer than 50 lines. Second prize is £50, with £10 for each shortliste­d poets. There is also a Wakefield postcode prize of £25.The sole adjudicato­r for this year’s contest is Gaia Holmes.
