The Doe is website which publishes anonymous stories to promote civil discourse. If you have a story to tell, frankly, openly, honestly, if you want to share personal experiences, blow a whistle or spark a meaningful conversation, The Doe might be the place to do it.

The site is a ‘place for people of all identities, backgrounds and beliefs’, with an editorial team of 28 based in four countries and speaking twelve languages. Editor-in-chief Colin says, ‘I love that I get to read about all sorts of people and perspectives that I never, ever would get to anywhere else.’ The site’s mission statement says, ‘By emphasising the safe and unbiased sharing of different values and worldviews, we encourage everyone reading to be part of a new awareness, driven by mutual respect and empathy.’ A successful pitch is most likely to be for a story which is personal, sincere, authentic and full of vivid anecdotes.

Recent posts include, ‘How I Avoided (Most of) the Pandemic in Vietnam’, ‘The Welsh Language Is Endangered – I’m Doing My Best to Preserve It’, ‘I Attended a Faith and Climate Action Workshop That Changed My Worldview’, ‘How to Debate Flat Earth Believers’ and ‘I Lost My Pride When I Came Out to My Muslim Family’.

To pitch your story send a 1-2 paragraph summary of your proposed article. Include a proposed alias and a sample headline that distils the idea into a few words. Finished features should be between 800 and 1,400 words. If accepted The Doe requires three weeks of exclusivity, after which you can republish wherever you’d like, with or without your name attached to the piece.
