Explore with Longreads
Longreads is a web publication inviting submissions of original columns, personal, researched, reported and critical essays in addition to features, investigations and curated reading lists. Check out the website for examples of all categories.
Essays and columns are usually 2,000-6,000 words long although they can be different lengths or broken up into a series depending on the length and subject matter. ‘Smart, original angles and fresh unique voices’ are what is wanted and payment rates are $500 per essay or column.
If you have an idea for a feature or investigation requiring deeper reporting first submit a pitch.
Say what is incredible and urgent about your idea, why you are the right person to write it and why it will fit Longreads. Features will be rigorously fact-checked and payment rates start at $1 per word but may be more depending on the amount of research, reporting and expenses needed. Editors are willing to collaborate with artists and photographers on stories and working with partners you may have in mind.
Reading lists typically have an essay style introduction followed by links to longform stories, books and other resources relating to the theme. ‘Timely topics, also offbeat and unique angles are especially welcome’. Payment rates are $350 per Reading List.
You will only receive a response to a submission or pitch if there is interest in publishing your work/ idea and it is recommended you also simultaneously approach other publications. Mention you are doing this when submitting and if your work is pitched exclusively to Longreads give a deadline of when you would like your submission to be considered.
To make your work/idea stand out email essays and feature pitches with a little detail and context in the subject line. For Reading List submissions include ‘Reading List and the proposed topic/theme in the subject line.
