For the younger set
A literary journal founded in 2020 Paper Lanterns has a content of non-fiction features, short stories, flash fiction, poetry, art and photography for readers aged 11-18 years old. The journal aims to ‘promote the voices of young people in Ireland and around the world’ and accepts submissions from those aged thirteen years and older.
Both non-fiction proposals of approximately 500 words and completed submissions of a maximum 1,800 words are welcome and may be on any topic of interest to, or from, teen writers. Academic essays are not wanted.
Short stories should be a maximum 2,000 words, flash fiction no more than 400 words and poetry a maximum forty lines. Submit no more than two short stories, three flash fiction pieces or three poems during the submission period.
Payment is €50 for poetry and flash fiction, €75 for short stories, art and photography and €50-€75 or a book token if you are under the age of 16 years for non-fiction.
The journal is open to submissions of non-fiction features, art and photography year round but only three times a year for poetry, short stories and flash fiction. See website for deadlines. If making multiple submissions submit each separately. No submission should have been previously published. Simultaneous submissions are welcome with the usual proviso.
For features email your work as an attachment with: Submission: Features, poetry, fiction or flash fiction, your name and the piece title in the subject line. You will then receive a link to a Google form which must be completed.
