High-flying Society prizes
The Society of Authors 2023 Awards are open for entry, with a total prize fund of more than £120,000.
There are nine SoA Awards, including the new ADCI (Authors with Disabilites and Chronic Illness) Prize, which will be awarded for the first time in 2023.
The 2023 SoA Awards are:
• ADCI Prize for a work of fiction containing a character or characters who are disabled or living with chronic illness by an author who self identifies as disabled or chronically ill. The prizes are £1,000 and £500 for two runners up. Closing date 31 October.
• ALCS Tom-Gallon Trust Award for a short story up to 5.000 words. The prizes are £2,000, £1,000, and £500 for up to four shortlisted writers. The closing date is 31 October.
• Betty Trask Prize for first novels by writers under 35, written in a traditional or romantic style. The prizes are £10,000 for the winner and the rest of the fund is split between the shortlist. The closing date is 30 November.
• Eric Gregory Awards for a collection by poets under 30. The prize fund is split between the shortlist. The closing date is 31 October.
• The McKitterick Prize for an author over forty for a published or unpublished first novel. The prizes are £4,000 for the winner, £2,000 for the runner up, and £1,000 for up to four shortlisted authors. The closing date is 31 October.
• Paul Torday Memorial Prize for a debut novel by authors aged 60 and over. The first prize is £3,000 and £1,000 for runners up. The closing date is 30 November.
• Queen’s Knickers Award for an outstanding illustrated book for children aged 0-7. The prizes are £5,000 and £1,000. The closing date is 30 November.
• Somerset Maugham Awards for young published writers of fiction, non-fiction and poetry to travel abroad. The closing date is 30 November.
• Gordon Bowker Volcano Prize for a novel by a UK or Irish writer focussing on the experience of travel away from home. The prizes are £2,000 and £750. The closing date is 31 October.
