Weird little words for Weird Little Worlds
US speculative fiction small press Weird Little Worlds Press is open to unsolicited submissions until the end of February. The Press plans to publish at least four novels this year and the unsolicited submissions period is designed to give authors of all experience levels the same opportunity of having their work read.
Co-founder and editor Willow Dawn Becker is looking for speculative fiction including science fiction, fantasy, horror, supernatural fiction, alternative history, etc. and wants stories that are fresh and unexpected. Becker notes that illumination and change are core values of Weird Little Worlds, and that they are ‘particularly looking for stories that build bridges, expand our knowledge and compassion, and motivate us towards actions that improve the world and how we relate to it’. She will also consider non-fiction stories of adventure and survival.
Not wanted are literary fiction, romance or true crime. No excessive language, gore or sex. Think in terms of what is acceptable in a 12 certificate film — some swearing, occasionally strong, with sex and violence presented with no or little graphic detail. Also avoid rehashed tropes, plots and characters. Your work has the best chance if it has already been through at least two rounds of editing, preferably by at least one person who isn’t your mother, and then been proofread.
Use standard Shunn novel format. Don’t include your name on your submission manuscript as the submission process is anonymous, with the intention that talent, execution, and concept is focused upon rather than an author’s name or following.
Payment is by negotiation but promises ‘excellent pay for excellent work’, potentially with an advance royalty. Essential to follow the full guidelines at https://weirdlittleworlds. com/submissions-guidelines/ and then make your submission here: https:// weirdlittleworlds.com/submissions/
