Why not pitch why now?
whynow is a digital magazine and production studio – with a Twitter following which includes Stephen Fry and Susie Dent – which is actively looking for features, interviews, stories and reviews in and around arts and culture. If you have a ‘hot take on goings-on in arts and culture’ they want to hear about it.
Specifically they want stories in these areas:
Music features, interviews and reviews. Either about high profile acts, or upcoming talents that deserve a light shining on them. Also sought are incredible stories that are surprising, or even unbelievable in some way — ones that make you say, ‘you’ll never guess what!’
Long Reads about real UK people. These should be authentic and engaging stories told through profiles, essays or investigations. The subjects don’t have to be mainstays of British culture but must have a story worth telling which is significant and thought-provoking. Avoid culture wars and politics.
Comment: Opinion pieces. If you’ve got an idea for a unique column, send it through. Amusing, light-hearted commentary is very welcome. You can be serious, but it’s not necessary.
Film, TV, and Gaming: The editors are always looking for brilliant features, interesting stories, and different viewpoints. They don’t need reviews of the latest releases though – they’ve already seen them.
Payment is £80 – £150 for the vast majority of pieces, but the editorial team say to
‘feel free to pitch something that doesn’t necessarily fall within those prices, but please be upfront about that.’
Put ‘Pitch’ in your email’s subject line. Try and be catchy with the rest of your title. Introduce yourself briefly and explain why you should write the story. What can you bring to it that somebody else couldn’t? Include links to some samples of your work if possible. Tell the editors why they should go with your idea: is it for an anniversary? A news article? A personal piece you’ve been researching? Do check if anyone else has already done it.
Give an idea of when you could submit the finished piece and if you have access to necessary talent or would need help with that. Say what the likely word count will be. And somehow keep all this to no more than 150 words! Email your pitch to editors@whynow.co.uk
