In science fiction the editorial team are looking for powerful plots with solid scientific and philosophical underpinnings. For fantasy any magical system must be both rigorously coherent and integral to the plot, and ‘overall the work must at least strive for originality’, which is a polite way of saying no Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones or Harry Potter imitations. Submissions will be judged primarily on plot and characterisation. Baen prefers a direct style of prose which doesn’t call attention to itself.
