World at War
From Angola to Yemen, those naughty COD chaps have waged war across the globe. Is there anywhere left to blow up?
This past August, Nigeria managed to contain an ebola virus outbreak. But arriving on its shores in its stead is something that spreads across the world with just as much ferocity: Activision’s globetrotting, commercially profitable brand of warfare. What was it about the Nigerian capital of Lagos that attracted the attentions of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare dev Sledgehammer Games? “We were inspired by the traffic scene in the film Heat, and wanted to find a setting capable of matching that” explains Glen Schofield, Sledgehammer’s studio head. “Since the story had already taken us to Africa, and since we’re set in the year 2055, we began looking at which cities within the continent were experiencing the fastest rate of growth. Lagos was at the top of the list, and as it’s already the most the most congested city in Africa – it was a natural choice”.
With Nigeria joining the party, it seems as though Call of Duty is fast running out of places to trash. But just how many of the world’s 193 countries has Activision’s juggernaut invaded?
