Af­ter PlayS­ta­tion icon Lara Croft made the leap over her shiny new Xbox home there was a lot of sur­prise, but no one ex­pected any­thing else to fol­low her. But it turns out it def­i­nitely isn’t a one-off as now the spin­ning wild child that is Crash Bandicoot is also fol­low­ing suit with his first ap­pear­ance ever on an Xbox con­sole com­ing this July. Per­haps this is the start of a univer­sal con­sole utopia – af­ter all, Master Chief is also tech­ni­cally on the Nin­tendo Switch too thanks to Minecraft.

N Sane Tril­ogy fea­tures a re­mas­ter of the first three Crash Bandicoot games with all of the retro plat­form­ing nos­tal­gia glory you might re­mem­ber from the 1990s. You play as the tit­u­lar Crash as you nav­i­gate a se­ries of lev­els to take down Doc­tor Nero Vor­tex’s evil schemes. While you’ll be run­ning around on foot for most of the ad­ven­ture, there are also ve­hi­cle­based lev­els that see you fly­ing planes and rid­ing jet boards.

The remastered ver­sion has had all of the speak­ing lines re-recorded and a brand new sound­track as well as a few tech­ni­cal changes to keep all three of them con­sis­tent, and a few new ad­di­tions. Coco Bandicoot – Crash’s lit­tle sis­ter – is now playable in all three games in­stead of just the third one, but you’ll have to un­lock her in each of them first. It’s a nice ad­di­tion that adds some va­ri­ety to how you choose to play. Time tri­als have also been added for ev­ery level to add a new chal­lenge and en­cour­age speedrun­ning if that’s your thing and need a chance to show off how good you are.

Change is good

Since it was orig­i­nally re­leased in 1996 don’t go ex­pect­ing any­thing new; it still sticks to its roots so you might find your­self bump­ing into a few things that feel a lit­tle out­dated now by mod­ern stan­dards. Jump­ing, for ex­am­ple, can be quite fid­dly to land cor­rectly if you’re not care­ful – you need to be in­cred­i­bly ac­cu­rate to stick a good land­ing with­out fall­ing back from the edge of a gap. Thank­fully most of these lit­tle nig­gles from the old games have been ironed out for this re­lease.

It’s a great op­por­tu­nity to ex­pe­ri­ence a clas­sic game that many wouldn’t have had ac­cess to be­fore, and more op­tions on how to play it is al­ways a great thing. Here’s hop­ing those boundaries will loosen fur­ther so we get to see even more games we wouldn’t ex­pect at some point in the near fu­ture. It would also be great to see more of the re­verse so other gamers out there could ex­pe­ri­ence the joys of the likes of Fa­ble and the Rare Re­play Col­lec­tion.
