FOCUS HOME INTERACTIVE
Focus Home Interactive allows us a glance at its next wave of games
2018 was a big year for Focus Home Interactive and possibly its most successful to date. This wouldn’t have been possible had it not been for the stellar line-up of games it released, which included, among others, The Council, Farming Simulator 19 and Vampyr.
This year the publisher is already positioned to have a similar success story with the release of A Plague Tale: Innocence and World War Z, with Greedfall and The Surge 2 to follow later in the year. It’s no surprise, then, that Focus is hoping to continue that success by renewing its relationship with its partnered studios which, it was revealed at Focus’ annual ‘What’s Next?’ event, are all at different stages of development on their next games.
Dontnod Entertainment is ferreting away at a game that Focus promises will be one of the most ambitious in the history of both the publisher and the studio. Deck 13, developer of The Surge and its upcoming sequel, is moving away from its sci-fi franchise to developing a brand-new one. Then there’s Saber Interactive, which has just released World War Z, and currently has two games in production, one of which is a game set in the Games Workshop universe. “We are very proud and happy to count Saber as a faithful developer partner,” says Focus Home Interactive COO John Bert. “Saber Interactive has an excellent vision of the market and the industry, with creative teams able to come up with crazy and spectacular game concepts able to conquer a massive number of players like World War Z or Mudrunner.”
There’s also Passtech Games, which brought us the indie title, Masters Of Anima, that is working on another indie-style title, and Streum On Studio which is making a shooter that’s based, yet again, on the Games Workshop Warhammer universe.
Focus has also partnered with four more studios. The biggest of which is Crackdown 3 developer Sumo Digital, with Focus saying, “The first fruit of this collaboration aims to deliver a multiplayer experience without compromise in a universe as dark as it is violent.” Newcomer Gasket Games, which comprises members of Relic Entertainment and Blackbird Interactive, is hard at work on another Games Workshop game.
The identity of the games that are being worked on are a closely guarded secret, but the two other studios Focus has partnered with have already revealed what they’re working on. The first is Limestone Games which is currently developing Aeon Must Die, a sci-fi beat-’em-up whose story changes depending on the choices you make. The other is Paris-based Lightbulb Crew which is creating Othercide, a horror-themed, turn-based strategy game, in which you’re tasked with doing battle with creatures from another dimension.
For now, though, with regards to the other games, we’ll have to settle for the cryptic promo posters that we’re shown alongside the announcements. But given Focus’ track record, we can expect some great things.
