Publisher Activision developer Infinity Ward release 2007 format Xbox 360 Now this is how you reboot a series. Ditching the increasingly tired WW2 setting, Infinity Ward energised the first-person shooter with a brutal gut punch of a blaster. Combining troublingly accurate military tech (the detached murder from the skies in Death From Above still chills) with incredibly impactful shooting, ModernWarfare turned COD into a colossus. With its forward-thinking, perks-based multiplayer, MW helped rewrite the rules for online shooters. Yet it’s that electrifying solo campaign that still stands out. Perfectly paced and superbly varied, its desperately tense sniper assassination quest through the irradiated remains of Pripyat remains perhaps the greatest mission in FPS history.
