seafarers, ranging long distances to fish from small, open sailing boats and trading their catch in ports on Ireland’s south and west coasts. Ireland’s very first saint, Ciarán, was born here in 350AD, and travelled almost the length of the known world. Two inlets, back to back on either side, almost divide the island in two. South Harbour is a deep inlet three cables in length that offers a charming anchorage in the absence of wind or swell from the south, while Trá Chiaráin (Kieran’s Strand), across the isthmus and considerably more snug and sheltered, has the main harbour and ferry pier at North Harbour.
