Kuma Caravan Hotspot
£149.99
This is a neat little box measuring just 100 x 75 x 25mm, with a short antenna for Wi-Fi out, a LAN and a WAN socket and a full-size USB port intended for connection either to the Kuma boosted antenna or a 3G cellular dongle. It’s marketed for caravan use, but what works for one fibreglass recreational abode can work for another. Installing and configuring it is dead easy via a browser page and there are LEDs on the front panel indicating the current status of the device. However, changing from one source to another requires a lengthy re-boot. Though it is said to only have a range of 1.5km it picked up all of our local hotspots on a scan. However, it seems to be around 30 per cent slower loading through the Wi-Fi router, both by Wi-Fi and Ethernet link, than it is coming directly through the same antenna, via the USB port. Of course sending the signal through yet another device and then transmitting via Wi-Fi is bound to slow things down and in a poor reception area it might just make it unusable.
