The weBBoat 4G has 2G, 3G and 4G capabilities, as well as being a Wi-Fi router for up to 30 Wi-Fi devices – all housed in a waterproof dome measuring 300mm high by 250mm in diameter. The unit has a 12/24V power lead at the bottom and a mains adaptor is also supplied, making connection 240V easy.

A waterproof SIM socket at the bottom takes a standard size SIM card, but there’s no Ethernet/LAN port, so connection directly to a laptop isn’t possible. To activate it you must download the Glomex app from either the Apple or Android app stores and then register the device using the password provided. The process is simple, if a little long-winded; it took us 10 minutes or so.

The app will automatically choose Wi-Fi over the cellular network when it can, to save money (this can be overruled).

On test it picked up hotspots up to four and a half miles away, but we were only able to get gett a strong enough signal from one just over two miles away for downloading at a sensible speed. No use for those without a smartphone or tablet, unfortunately.
